يدور موضوع الكتاب حول فلسفة إبن باجة الأندلسي والذي تُنسب إليه نظرية الفيض المشرقية جنباً إلى جنب مع نظريتي النفس والعقل في الفلسفة الأرسطوطاليسية؛ وعلى هذا، تقوم فلسفة إبن باجة العقلية على التفريق بين عقول أربعة هي: العقل الهيولاني والعقل بالفعل والعقل المستفاد والعقل الفعّال. وكان يرى كالفارابي أن لكل عقل من هذه العقول وظيفة مزدوجة. فهو مادة من جهة وصورة من جهة أخرى، أي مادة للعقل الذي يليه وصورة للعقل الذي يسبقه. فهناك إذن نوع من التدرج في الوظائف العقلية لدى الإنسان، فالعقل المستفاد هو الذي يفيض من العقل الفعّال، وهو ما سنرى في هذا الكتاب لدى إبن باجة مادة للصور العقلية التي تفيض عليه. ولكنه في الوقت نفسه، صورة لعقل أدنى مرتبة منه وهو العقل بالفعل. وهذا الأخير مادة له، ولكنه من جهة أخرى صورة للعقل الهيولاني، .. ويمكن إجمال مذهب إبن باجة بأنه الصورة الجوهرية للإنسان، صورة عقلية تسمى عقلاً بالفعل. ويستطيع هذا العقل بفضل التأمل أن يفكر في ذاته على النحو الذي تدرك به العقول المفارقة أو الملائكة ذواتها، وهذا النوع من الحدس العقلي هو الذي يسمو بالإنسان عن مرتبة جميع الكائنات المادية.
أما عن فلسفة إبن باجة الخاصة فيمكن القول بأنه وإن استمد بعض عناصرها من فلسفة أرسطو وأفلاطون والفارابي فإنها تبدو مبتكرة إلى حد كبير، وخاصة في مفهومه للسعادة، فالفكرة المحورية في تفكير إبن باجة هي أن السعادة الحقة لا تكون إلا بإدراك العقل لذاته، وذلك بعد سلسلة عديدة الحلقات من الإدراكات المتدرجة وعندئذ يصبح العقل والمعقول شيئاً واحداً، اي عندما يدرك العقل أنه نشاط فعّال، وفي هذه الحال يدرك الفيلسوف ذاته خارج نطاق الزمن أي من وجهة نظر الأزل .... الكثير عن فلسفة إبن باجة بين دفتي هذا الكتاب.
