"النقد" هو المحور الذي ينتظم حوله هذا الكتاب: نقد العالم في بنيته الراهنة وفي تاريخه القريب؛ نقد النظرية الثقافية والأدبية كما تطورت خلال العقود الأخيرة مع ما بعد البنيوية والنظرية ما بعد الإستعمارية؛ نقد الفكر القومي؛ نقد مقولتيّ "العالم الثالث" و"أدب العالم الثالث" ونظرية "العوالم الثلاثة"؛ نقد إدوارد سعيد في تجاذباته الوجدانية كما تجلّت في كتابه "الإستشراق" وفي سواه؛ نقد ما أشاعه سعيد ومدرسة دراسات التابع وكتّاب مثل سلمان رشدي من إعلاء لشأن المثقف المنفيّ والمهاجر والهجين على حساب الثقافة الوطنية وأبنائها الذين يعيشون ويقاومون فيها؛ نقد الطريقة التي تُبنى بها المُعتّمدات الأدبيّة المكرّسة؛ ونقد النقّاد الذين اتهموا ماركس بالمركزية الأوروبية والإستشراق بناءً على كتاباته الصحافية عن الهند، وهو نقدٌ لا ينفكّ يربط الظواهر الثقافية بشروط إنتاجها، لا الفكرية والأيديولوجية فحسب، بل التاريخية والإجتماعية والإقتصادية والسياسية أيضاً.
