الفصل الثالث: يستعرض الأسباب المفسرة للتوحد كالأسباب الجينية والكروموسومية المحتملة، والأسباب العقلية، والأسباب العائدة لتكوين الدماغ، والأسباب عصبية، والأسباب العصبية والبيوكيماوية المحتملة، والأسباب البيئية، كما وضح نسبة انتشار التوحد، وذكر المبررات التي يمكن أن تكون مسئولة عن الزيادة الواضحة في التوحد.
