يتوجه هذا الكتاب لطلاب قسم اللغة العربية ويقدم لهم، دروساً في كتب النحو اختارها المؤلف لتمثل المدارس النحوية العربية فاختار من "البصرة" الكتاب لإمام النحاة سيبويه، و"المقتضب" للمبر" ومن الكوفة "معاني القرآن" لإمامها الفراء، ثم قدم فصولاً من "الإنصاف" ليقف بالطالب على طرائق الخلاف بين المدرستين، قد قدم من "بغداد" كتاباً واحداً لعالمين هو "شرح ابن يعيش" على مفصل الزمخشري، وانتقل إلى "الأندلس" ليقدم كتاب ابن مضاء "في الرد على النحاة، وختم الكتاب "بمصر" \فقدم نصوصاً من "المغني" لابن هشام، ومن "شرح الأشموني" على الألفية وفي كل ذلك قدم لكل كتاب بمقدمة عرف فيها بالملامح العامة للمدرسة التي ينتمي إليها المؤلف، وقدم النصوص مشروحة مع عناية خاصة بالأسس التي ينهض عليها النحو القديم.
