لئن كان إهتمام كثيرين من علماء العربية بالإعراب فإن عنايتهم بالتصريف كانت أقلّ، ولذا أمست الحاجة إليه عظيمة، ولا سيما أنّه لا يقل أهمية في اللغة عن الإعراب.
والمؤلف هنا يتناول أحد النحويين المشهورين في الأندلس والمشرق انتشرت أقواله في كتب المتخصصين، وهو أبو الحسن علي بن مؤمن الإشبيلي المعروف بإبن عصفور عالم عصره بالعربية، صاحب الترجيحات النحوية، والتصنيفات المعروفة.
وتزداد قيمة هذا الكتاب بالحديث عن نشأة التصريف وتاريخه وعن مذاهب المدارس المشهورة فيه ليقدم لنا دراسة متكاملة في موضوعه من أحسن ما قيل في بابته؛ وقسم الكتاب إلى تمهيد وبابين: في التمهيد بسط المؤلف نشأة علم التصريف وتطوّره، منطلقاً من تحديد معنى هذا العلم، لتوضيح معالم البذور الأولى، والمحاولات البكر في تأسيسه.
في الباب الأول عرض لابن عصفور، ووزَّع ذلك على ثلاثة فصول: أما الفصل الأول فترجم فيه لابن عصفور، وأما الفصل الثاني فعقده لتوضيح صلة ابن عصفور بالعلماء الذين تقدّموه، وأما الفصل الثالث فكشف المؤلف فيه عن مذهب ابن عصفور في التصريف، ثم انتقل المؤلف إلى الباب الثاني، حيث عرض لكتاب "الممتع"، وفصّل أمره في خمسة فصول مشيراً إلى موضوعات ذلك الكتاب، وأسلوبه، وتاريخ تصنيفه وتقديمه.
