يهدف هذا البحث إلى التركيز على النزعة العلمية عند "كارل بوبر" (1902-1994) الذي يعد من أهم فلاسفة القرن العشرين، وبيان اتجاهه العلمي ومكانة التجربة والميتافيزيقا عنده. وبوبر هو أحد الرُّواد الذين استخدموا المنهج العلمي "الفرضي" الذي يتصف بإنكاره للاستقراء، واستخدامه للاستنباط الرياضي. وتكمن أهمية نظريته العلمية في تمييزه بين "الميتافيزيقا والعلم" من جهة و"اللاعلم" من جهة أخرى.
هذه المشكلة من أهم المشكلات التي شغلت بوبر مما جعلته يتصف بنزعة أصيلة، أكَّد "بوبر" على أهمية "الفروض الصورية" في العلوم الطبيعية، التي تستخدم أحكاماً مسبقة، هذه الأحكام يمكن إخضاعها لنقد قاس. فقد أكدت الأبحاث العلمية المعاصرة بأن هناك ظواهر لا يمكن إثباتها بالحواس أي عن (طريق تجريبي خالص)، بل عن طريق افتراض فروض غير مباشرة ثم وضعها في صيغ رياضية بطريقة الاستنباط الصوري. ويؤكد بوبر على التجربة التي تستند في أساسها على فروض صوريّة، بينما يرفض التجارب التي تقوم على الاستقراء.
يتكون هذا البحث من مقدمة وأربعة أبواب عالجت المواضيع التالية: جاء الباب الأول بمثابة مدخل إلى فلسفة كارل بوبر، وأما الباب الثاني فقد تحدث عن العلم عند بوبر، الذي جاء ضمن إطار منظور جديد، وتناول المؤلف في الباب الثالث مناقشة موضوع المذهب التاريخي بين العلم والميتافيزيقا، وخصص الباب الرابع والأخير للحديث عن النظرية التطورية بين التجربة والميتافيزيقا.
