لا نملك الكثير من المعارف على الأنواع التلحينية التي كانت متداولة في العصور العربية السالفة. ونعرف من الأنواع التي نتداولها اليوم أو التي نسج عليها الموسيقيون والمغنون في القرن التاسع عشر والقرن والقرن العشرين، القصيدة والموال والدور والموشح والطقطوقة وما شابه ذلك. وإذا كان المونولوغ والمحاورة هما من الأنواع الغنائية التي نعرف تماماً متى ظهرت في الموسيقى العربية وكيف، وهما من نتاج المسرح الغنائي العربي في مصر في أوائل القرن العشرين، إلا أن الأنواع الغنائية الأخرى أقدم نشأة وأسبق ظهوراً. وكلما رجعنا في الزمن سنوات، ازدادت صورة الشكل الذي نشأت عليه هذه الأنواع الغنائية غموضاً.
كتاب يُقرأ ويُسمع، إذ لا بد، مع قراءته، من الاستماع إلى النماذج التي سُجلت على الأشرطة لشرح مضمونه، على نحو يسهّل كثيراً للقارئ العادي فهم الأنواع والأشكال، من الطقطوقة إلى القصيدة والدور والموشح، وما إليها من أنواع في الموسيقى العربية، أغنيات ومعزوفات. والكتاب تأريخي أيضاً، لأنه يواكب الأغنيات التي تطورت معها أشكال تلحين هذه الأنواع في القرن العشرين.
