كان مديراً لمعهد معهد الدراسات الإقليمية في الجامعة نفسها.
من مؤلَّفاته La Victime et ses masques، و Master and Disciple: The Cultural and Foundation of Morocan Authoritarianism.
تحصّل على شهادة الدكتوراه من جامعة السوربون سنة 1977.
درّس في جامعة محمّد الخامس في الرباط بين 1972 - 1989، قبل أن ينتقل إلى جامعة برنستون في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكيّة كأستاذ زائر منذ سنة 1990.
وكان المدير المؤسّس لمعهد الدراسات عبر الإقليميّة (transrégionales) للشرق الأوسط المعاصر وشمال إفريقيا وآسيا الوسطى في الجامعة نفسها (1994-2004).
قام بعدد من البحوث الميدانيّة حول التاريخ العرقي للمغرب وليبيا والمملكة العربيّة السعوديّة.[1] ترجمت بعض كتاباته لأهمّيتها إلى لغات عدّة؛ فكتابه "حكاية حجّ، موسم في مكّة" مثلا ألّفه بالفرنسيّة ونشره سنة 2004 في باريس، وقعت ترجمته إلى الانجليزية سنة 2006 ثمّ في ما بعد إلى العربيّة والإيطاليّة والألمانيّة.
أسهم عبد الله حمودي في إنتاج عدد من الأشرطة التلفزيّة انطلاقا من بحوثه الإثنوغرافيّة.
كما ألقى عدّة محاضرات حول الحركات الإسلاميّة ومجتمع الشرق الأوسط والظاهرة الاستعماريّة، والنظريّة الإثنوغرافيّة الفرنسيّة والأنثروبولوجيا السياسيّة.
ترجمت بعض كتاباته لأهمّيتها إلى لغات عدّة؛ من مؤلَّفاته: La victime et ses masques: Essai sur le sacrifice et la mascarade au Maghreb ، 1988 بحث في الذبيحة والمسخرة بالمغارب".

ركز الكاتب في هذا على تحليل ممارسات السلطة وعلاقات الحكم، بعد وصفها في مجال السياسة ومؤسسات الدولة، وفي عدد من ميادين الحياة الإجتماعية المتنوعة، مبيناً التطابق البنيوي بين نوعية العلاقات على مستوى المجال المجتمعي والثقافي الخاص واليومي وعلى المستوى المؤسسات الكبرى والثقافة بوصفها كلا.
تتلخص الفرضية الأساسية التي تنبني عليها فصول هذا الكتاب في تسرب خطاطة ثقافية من مجال الصوفية والولاية إلى المجال السياسي؛ وهذه الخطاطة التي استندت إليها علاقات السلطة واستمدت منها ديناميتها هي في نظري علاقة الشيخ بالمريد كما أدرسها في فصلين يتوجان حصيلة أبحاث أخرى كنت قمت بها حول الولاية وإشكاليتها في جنوب المغرب والأطلس في القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر.
وقد يتساءل بعضهم: لماذا أعطيت علاقة الشيخ والمريد هذه الأهمية، ظناً منه أنه ربما كان من الأفضل التركيز على علاقة الأب والأبناء، والتساؤل مشروع هنا، خصوصاً أن هناك كتابات تحلل الوضع السلطوي العربي إستناداً إلى مفهوم "الأبوية الجديدة" (أو "البطركية".
والجواب هنا هو أن الأب ووظيفة الأبوية لا يضيفان على أي وضع صبغة دينية أو ربانية؛ وأكثر من هذا فإن تلك الوظيفة (أي وظيفة الأب) لا تقوم مقام الوظيفة الأمامية.
وسيتبين للقارئ كيف أن الولي، هو الوحيد الذي يجسد الوظيفتين رمزياً، وبهذا التجسيد يحدث نوعاً ثالثاً (بين المنث والمذكر) يضمن إعادة إنتاج المجتمع وتسلسله على أساس قيم تحجب تساوي النوعين الأولين في ضمان إعادة إنتاج المجتمع (بإنجاب الأولاد).
