لمعَ نجمُ صلاح الدِّين الصَّفَدي في سماء الأدب في القرن الثَّامن الهجري، حتَّى عدَّهُ العلماءُ أديبَ الزَّمان، وذلك لما قدَّمهُ للمكتبة العربيَّة من روائع التَّصانيف، في التَّاريخ، والأدب، واللُّغة، والبلاغة.
ويُعَدُّ كتاب «رشف الزُّلال في وصف الهلال» أحدَ تلك الكُتُب، التي انفردتْ بموضوعها، فانقطع نظيرها؛ حيثُ جمعَ الصَّفَدي فيه من العلوم، ما لا تجدهُ مجتمعاً في مصدرٍ آخر. يُعَدُّ كتابُ «رَشْف الزُّلال» الكتابَ الوحيد، في المكتبة العربيَّة، الذي يُفصِّلُ الحديثَ عن الهِلال، من النَّواحي اللُّغوية، والتَّفسيرية، والفقهيَّة، والفَلَكِيَّة، والأدبية، ممَّا يُعطي فكرةً واضحةً جليَّة، عن موسوعيَّة الصَّلاح الصَّفَدي، الذي استطاع، بغزارة علمه، أنْ يستخلصَ من بحارِ العُلُوم والأدب، علْماً يعزُّ علينا أنْ نجدهُ مُجتمعاً في مصدرٍ آخر، فهو - بحقٍّ - كَنزٌ من كُنُوز ذخائر التُّراث العربي الإسلامي، التي تزخرُ بها المكتبة الصَّفَدية.
