لكل مجتمع ثقافته التي تميزه عن غيره من المجتمعات وهذه الثقافة ليست وليدة الحاضر ولكنها تراكمت عبر السنين والعصور المختلفة. وكما توصف الثقافة بأنها مكتسبة حيث إنها تنتقل من جيل إلى جيل في المجتمع عن طريق وسائط متعددة، وتعمل المجتمعات على تنشئة أبنائها على ثقافتها، ويأتي من خلال عملية التنشئة الاجتماعية. وعلى اعتبار أن القيم صورة المجتمع، لأنها الضابط والمعيار الأساسي للسلوك الفردي الاجتماعي وهي تتنظم فيما يسمى بالبناء القيمي الذي يعكس أهداف المجتمع.
وصحافة الأطفال إحدى وسائل الإعلام التي يستخدمها المجتمع لنقل ثقافته وقيمه للأجيال القادمة. ولصحافة الأطفال باعتبارها وسيطًا من وسائط مخاطبة الطفولة لها طابعها الخاص بها، حيث يشعر الطفل بسهولة أسلوبها وجماله وتوحي له الكلمة المطبوعة بالفكرة المؤثرة المقدمة، وتهذب الصورة ذوقه وتتيح لخياله أن ينطلق وتغري بالألوان بصره، وعند هذا تكون الصحيفة رفيقة حبيبة للطفل تقدم له الحقيقة والفكرة دون تعب أو عناء.
يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة تأثير الواقع الثقافي في مجتمعي مصر والسعودية على صحافة الأطفال التي تصدر فيها (مجلة علاء الدين، مجلة باسم)، حيث اهتم الكتاب برصد خصائص الواقع الثقافي في المجتمعين والعوامل التي ساعدت على تشكيله بصورته الحالية مركزًا على القسم السائد في المجتمعين لمقارنتها بالقيم التي ظهرت في المجلتين. كما يأتي الكتاب كمحاولة لتوضيح دور تلك الصحافة في التنشئة الاجتماعية وتأثيرها بقيم المجتمع الذي تصدر فيه.
