ولكنه لا يعيد طرح السؤال إلا ليجيب عنه بجذرية لا تعرف المهادنة: فالإسلام لم يتخلف بعامل خارجي، بل من داخله وبأيدي المسلمين أنفسهم. لا إسلام الدين بل إسلام التفسير الديني. إذ ابتداء من نهاية القرن الخامس الهجري فرض تفسير بعينه للإسلام نفسه هو التفسير الأصولي. والأصولية ،التي خنقت كل صوت آخر وعممت المنطق القائل بأن كل جديد بدعة، وبدعة أيضاً كل دخيل يأتي المسلمين من الغير، هي التي أغلقت كل دوائر الانفتاح التي عرفها الإسلام مع فلاسفته وعلمائه وشعرائه، وقادت المسلمين إلى ليل الانحطاط الطويل.
وفي هذا الزمن الذي يبدو فيه العالم العربي والإسلامي مهددا بالانكفاء نحو قرون وسطى جديدة يكتسب هذه الكتاب راهنية ساخنة.
