في يناير من العام 1874 بدأ الألماني جوستاف ناختيقال رحلته إلى دارفور قادمًا من وداى وكان قد بدأها (مثل هنري بارت) من طرابلس الغرب في ليبيا متجهًا إلى دارفور عن طرق بحيرة تشاد وباقرمي ووداى، ومكث في الفاشر ستة أشهر، وكان ذلك في عهد السلطان إبراهيم محمد حسين، آخر سلاطين الفور. وبالرغم من أن ناختيقال لم تتح له فرصة للتحرك لعدة أسباب منها الاضطرابات التي اعترت المملكة في حدودها الجنوبية الشرقية، إثر مناوشات الزبير باشا، وعدم الترحيب الذي واجهه من قبل السكان المحليين، والاستعدادات التي كانت تقوم بها الحكومة المصرية وحكومة الخرطوم لغزو دارفور، وقصر المدة التي مكثها، إلا أن كل ذلك لم يمنعه من جمع مادة غزيرة ثرة وروايات شفهية ومكتوبة عن تاريخ دارفور الوسيط، خاصة وقد كان هو آخر من شاهد هذه السلطنة العظيمة ووثق تاريخها وهي في آخر حلقة من حلقات انهيارها وسقوطها عام 1874- بعد ان بقيت لأكثر من ثلاثة قرون في بعض الروايات.
وقد قدم الأستاذ النور عثمان هذه الترجمة فصارت أول ترجمة سودانية باللغة العربية لهذا السفر العظيم من أصله الألماني مباشرة. وميزة هذا النص أن مترجمه على علم بدقائق موضوع الترجمة وأقدر على الإحاطة بها.
