تبدأ معاناة المسافر غير المتقن للغة البلد الذي يقصده عند وصوله إلى مطار هذا البلد. فالاستدلال إلى أبواب الخروج وإلى أماكن جلب الحقائب هو أول ما يواجه المسافر عند الوصول. ثم تأتي مشكلة الانتقال من المطار إلى البيت أو الفندق الذي سينزل فيه المسافر. فالتفتيش عن سيارات الأجرة أو الباصات أو القطارات واختيار من منهم كي يوصلك بالطريقة الأسهل، لهما مهمتين مستحيلتين إذا لم يكن بإمكانك التحدث بلغة البلد المقصود.
وتصل إلى الفندق حيث تبدأ معاناة من نوع آخر، فيمكن أن الفندق لم يحجز لك غرفة، أو أنه حجز لك غرفة ولكن ليست بالمواصفات التي طلبتها. كل هذه المشاكل لا يمكن مواجهتها إذا لم تكن تتقن اللغة الفرنسية أو على الأقل استخدام التعابير التي يمكن أن تسهل لك المهمة.
