البراجماتية كفلسفة لعبت دوراً حاسماً وخطيراً في تاريخ الفلسفة المعاصرة، حيث أولت عنايتها للإنسان في واقعه وبيئته مستخدمة كل ما حققه العلم من أجل إخضاع الطبيعة لسيطرة الإنسان وخدمة أغراضه. فهي نسق يربط صحة كل المفاهيم بنتائجها العملية، إذ تؤكد الإجراء المباشر والعملي لمواجهة التحديات في مواقف متغيرة. فالصحيح في ظرف معين يصبح غير صحيح في ظرف آخر.
إنها فلسفة عملية جاءت كاستجابة للفلسفات التي ظهرت أواخر القرن 19 وأوائل القرن 20، والتي تميّزت بـ: تأكيد الفردية، وتفاعلها مع المجتمع، وتأكيد تفوق الأسلوب العلمي. لذلك أعلن البراجماتيون أن الفلسفة يجب أن تجعل لنفسها طبيعة عملية وأن تصبح فعّالة وتجريبية، فانتقدوا الفلسفة التي تؤكد على المبادىء الثابتة والغايات الجامدة، معتبرين أنه لكي تساهم الفلسفة في فهم عالم اليوم عليها أن توجه نظرها نحو هذا التصوّر العلمي، ويجب ألا تكتفي بتناول هذا العلم كبناء نظري مستقل قائم بذاته، بل يجب أن تنظر إليه في علاقته بعالم الحياة اليومية وبمختلف أشكال التجربة البشرية.
إن هذه الأفكار التي حملتها الفلسفة البراجماتية هي الحافز الذي ساقني صوب هذه الفلسفة، لا سيما تركيزها على العلم وتنوّع طرائقه ومجالاته وانفتاحه الدائم على ما هو أسمى وأغني، ولم يكن العلم ليبني نظرياته بناءً محدداً ونهائياً، فهو لا يكتفي بإخضاعها للتجربة للبرهنة على صحتها، بل هو يقيس تقدمه بحالة الشعور والرضا، فكانت دعوة واضحة إلى العلم نفسه للإنطلاق في مناهج واتجاهات جديدة موازية للأنساق الطبيعية في تنوعها وانتظاماتها، بحيث تكون النظريات العلمية أقدر على الإنفتاح وعلى تشكيل بناءها المنطقي المتفاعل مع الكون، لذا ذهبت إلى البحث عن المعيار العلمي والأخلاقي في الفلسفة البراجماتية.
