انطلاقاً من حسّ تاريخي عميق لماهية الدين والفلسفة كليهما، يطرح المؤلف موضوع الدين في إطار الفلسفة ليكون صراحة هذا بمثابة بناء فلسفي يرتكز إلى دعائم متينة. فبعد كتابيه "الدين والمجتمع" و"الأديان الحية" يأتي كتاب أديب صعب "المقدمة في فلسفة الدين" ليكمل ثلاثية في الدراسات الدينية من نواحيها التربوية والتاريخية والفلسفية.
يبدأ الكتاب بفصلين تمهيديين، يجيب أحدهما عن سؤال "ما هو الدين؟" انطلاقاً من العناصر المشتركة بين الأديان كما توصل إليها المؤلف في خلاصة "الأديان الحيّة" ويوضح الآخر العلاقة بين الدين والفلسفة عبر عرض موضوعي موجز لأهم ما قاله الفلاسفة عن الدين خلال التاريخ ثم تلي ستة فصول منهجية تتناول وجود الله، الخبرة الدينية، مسألة الشر، الدين والأخلاق، الوجه الآخر للحياة، يعالج فيها المؤلف الآراء والمواقف والحلول الفلسفية المختلفة لهذه المسائل ويطرح موقفه هو.
ولعل نقطة الكتاب المحورية تبرز في تمييزه بين معنى ضيق ومعنى واسع للدين، يحصر أحدهما الدين في بعض الخبرات الخاصة كالظهورات والأصوات والرؤى والعجائب، فيما يجد الآخر أن نطاق الدين هو الحياة الإنسانية كلها وقد وضعت في ضوء الإلهي أو المقدس. هذا التمييز يحمل المؤلف على نقد نظرية المعرفة المسماة "تجريبية" واقتراح نظرة بديلة من شأنها استيعاب الخبرة الدينية بمعناها الواسع.
