إن لفقهاء القرن التاسع وأوائل القرن العاشر الفضل الأكبر في البحث عن حل القهوة ووصفها، فقد ألف فيه الكثيرون منهم ضمن مجموعة فتاوى أو رسائل أو أراجيز في مدح القهوة. وفي هذا الكتاب جمع المؤلف من بين هذه المؤلفات نتفاً من بعض ما نظم في القهوة ورتبه على سبعة أبواب.
الأول: في معنى القهوة وصفتها وطبعها، وفي أي بلدة بدأ انتشارها ولأي معنى طبخت وشربت وعلا منارها. الباب الثاني: في سياق المحضر الذي كتب في شأنها بمكة المشرفة، وذكر فتاوى العلماء بالحلّ والحرمة، وأقوال ذوي المعرفة. الباب الثالث: في إبطال دعوى الإسكار بها، وأنها في الشراب الطهور، وذكر بعض من اعتنى بشربها ولازم عليها من السادة المعتمد على أقوالهم وأفعالهم في بيان الشكل والمحظور. الباب الرابع: في إبطال القول بحرمتها لما فيها من الضرر. الباب الخامس: فيما يوجب الحرمة لا في ذاتها بل في تعاطيها بالأوصاف الخارجة عنها. الباب السادس: في نكت متفرقة وفوائد تتعلق بها. الباب السابع: في بعض ما روي من النظم لبعض أعيان العلماء، من القول البليغ المشتمل على حلها وجليل فوائدها.
