التقى به للمرة الأولى في اختبار الخوف الذي أجراه للطلاب المتقدمين لكلية الطيران، لم ينجح ولم يفشل، لكنه ظل يجرب الخوف في المسافة الفاصلة بين الشجاعة والجبن على شفة الوطن، التقى به صدفة ثانية بعد عشرة أعوام، وهو طبيب يحمل بندقية، هذه المرة كانت حياة الجيش القاسية اختباراً عملياً لتحمّل النائبات، نبش في نفسه ذكريات الخوف، وكوابيس الفشل، لم تنفع مشاعر الحب النبيلة رغم قوتها من تعديل كفّة ميزان حياته، لقد كانت كفّة المصائب راجحة لأنها معلقة إلى الهاوية. وعندما تتنفس الهاوية، ينسى الطبيب عنوان المرض وملامح الدواء، و يترجّل النسر من الذرى، ليزحف حول مدرسة يتناول فيها الأطفال درساً وطنيا في الشجاعة، يمسح جدار المدرسة بجناحه المعوّق، محاولاً أن يحنو عليهم بكل ما لديه من عنفوان.
