استطاع الشعر الخليجي الحديث أن يوجد لنفسه موقعاً متميزاً في المشهد الشعري العربي، متساوقاً بشكل لافت مع موجات التحديث والتطور المصاحبة للشعر العربي الحديث... ولقد أثمر ذلك النبوغ الشعري لشعراء الخليج العربي أن برزت الدراسات النقدية العديدة والمتنوعة لشعرهم بوصفها ظاهرة طبيعية تتلو الأعمال الأدبية والإبداعية...
وفي هذا الكتاب يحاول الدكتور "خليفة بن عربي" الكشف عن كيفية تناول النقاد العرب الشعر الخليجي الحديث في ضوء الاتجاهات النقدية، وما هية تلك الاتجاهات التي شكلت رؤاهم النقدية، ومدى ترسَمهم الأطر العامة المكونة لها.
قسم الكاتب دراسته النقدية هذه إلى مدخل وخمسة اتجاهات تناول المدخل النقد العربي وإشكالية المنهج، يلي ذلك: المنطلقات الفكرية لكل من: الاتجاه الاجتماعي، والاتجاه الفني، والاتجاه البنيوي، ثم الاتجاه التأويلي، والاتجاه الإسلامي ودلالات المفهوم.
وفي ختام الدراسة رأى الكاتب أن الشعر الخليجي الحديث "اسس لعمليات نقدية ثرة، وبنى من خلال مجموع الدراسات التي تناولته رؤىً موازية شخصت من داخل النظريات العامة للإتجاهات النقدية، وقد أكد ذلك عمق ذلك التناول مكانه التجربة الشعرية لشعراء الخليج العربي ورصانة الدراسات التي قامت عليه من قبل رواد النقد الخليجيين وغير الخليجيين، وقد دل مجموع تلك الدراسات على استيعاب النقاد للمكونات الأساسية للمناهج النقدية (...) لقد حاولت دراستنا هذه إلقاء الضوء على مسألة مهمة نرى أن الحديث عنها لا يمكن استيفاؤه، فما حوته من دراسات نقدية ما هو جزء يسير من دراسات أخرى كثيرة، فالتجارب الشعرية لا حدَ لها (...) ونأمل أن تكون –هذه الدراسة- مفتتحاً لدراسات اخرى تبحر في مضامين النقد الحديث للشهر الخليجي".
