يعتبر هذا الكتاب أهم مصدر تاريخي أندلسي كتب بعد صدور قرار النفي بحق الأندلسيين المورسكيين، فصاحبه يتكلم هنا وهو بمنأى عن محاكم التفتيش، يجادل المسيحيين واليهود، ويستعرض من خلال ذلك ما فعله الإسبان بشعبه وظروف انتقال هؤلاء إلى شمال إفريقية. وصل الحجري إلى المغرب أواخر عهد المنصور الذهبي واشتغل لديه بالترجمة 1599/1007، وقام بالمهمة نفسها لدى السلطان زيدان وابنيه عبد الملك والوليد.
تعطي الرحلة صورة حية عن تطور اللغة العربية لدى المورسكيين بعد تجربتهم المريرة مع الإسبان فالرحالة تعلم العربية سراً، وهذه اليوميات تتضمن وقائع رحلته المؤلمة منذ خروجه من الأندلس وحتى وصوله إلى لاهاي في هولندا مروراً بمراكش وباريس وبوردو وغيرها من الحواضر العربية والأوروبية. واحد من أندر النصوص في اللغة العربية، ووثيقة تاريخية نادرة.
