تتناول هذه الدراسة موضوع عقائد الحياة والمذاهب في الحضارة العراقية القديمة وذلك في حدود المعلومات التي تقدمها النصوص المسمارية، السومّرية والألحدية، فضلاً على الأدلة المستخلصة من نتائج التنقيبات الأثرية. وتهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التعريف بأفكار الواقيين القدماء في مجالين فكريين أساسيين يخص المجال الأول نشوء الكون وبدء الحياة وقلق الإنسان. أما المجال الثاني فمحوره المذهب والمعتقدات القديمة عن عناصر استمرار الحياة وضمان ازدهارها. وبالرجوع إلى فهرس هذه الدراسة نجد أنها تتألف من مقدمة وأربعة فصول، فضلاً على الخاتمة والمسرد.
تحدد المقدمة آفاق البحث وتوضح مدى أهمية في دراسة تأريخ العراق القديم، وفهم أصول الفكر الإنساني بشكل عام. كما تتضمن نبذة عن تكون فكرة هذه الدراسة وعن وسائل البحث المستخدمة فيها مع عرض للفصول الأربعة التي يتضمنها الكتاب. يتناول الفصل الأول: موضوعة "التكوين والخلق"، ثلاثة مواضيع أساسية في الفكر العراقي القديم تخص خلق الكون وأصل الآلهة وخلق البشر، أي هذا الفصل يتناول بدء الحياة أصلاً. أما الفصل الثاني: فيعالج استمرار الحياة ودوري الآلهة ألأم وإلهة الخصوبة في ضمان ذلك الاستمرار. ينتهي الفصل الثاني إلى ننخر ساك (ننتو) وإنكي ( أيا) هما اللذان اعتبرا الثنائي الآلهة، الأم وإله الخصوبة، وفي هذا تصحيح للرأي الشائع في أوساط الباحثين والمهتدين بالموضوع عن كون إنانا (عشتار) ودموزي (تموز) صاحبي ذانيك الدورين في العراق القديم.
ولغرض استكمال الدراسة جوانب الموضوع فقد خصص الفصل الثالث: لتوضيح الدور الحقيقي لكل من عشتار وتموز في الديانة والآداب العراقية القديمة. إن النتائج التي توصل إليها البحث في الفصل الثالث تقود الباحث للتساؤل عن حقيقة ما يذهب إليه معظم المختصين، في الوقت الحاضر، من أن الاعتقاد الإله وقيامته كان مبدءاً واحداً اشتركت فيه حضارات الشرق الأدنى القديمة والحضارة الإغريقية. لذلك فقد خصص الفصل الرابع لتقصي جوانب هذا الموضوع بغية تقديم إجابة واضحة ومقبولة على ذلك التساؤل.
تلي فصول الكتاب خاتمة تعرض أهم النتائج التي خلص إليها البحث. وأخيراً ينتهي الكتاب بسرد للمصطلحات والأسماء التي وردت في المتن. هنا لابد أن نشير إلى أن كل فصل قد لحق بخلاصة تعرض أهم ما ناقشه الفصل وما تلخص عنه من استنتاجات.
