ريتشارد وايس: وُلد في عام ١٩٢٣م، ونشأ في مدينة نيويورك قبل أن يلتحق بالبحرية الأمريكية.
بعد أن وضعت الحرب أوزارها، حصل وايس على درجة الدكتوراه تحت إشراف الفيزيائي الشهير أوبنهايمر، وعمل في مختبر بروكهافن الوطني.
يمكن القول إن أعظم إسهامات وايس في علم الأشعة السينية هو إقناعه الجيش الأمريكي أن دراسات الكثافة الإلكترونية تلعب دورًا حيويًّا فيما يتعلق بالتطور العسكري.
توفي عام ٢٠٠٨م عن عمر يناهز ٨٥ عامًا.

ييتبع كتاب "مذكرات عالم فيزياء" الجهود التي بذلت من أجل قياس شحنة الالكترون والحركة المغزلية وكمية التحرك في الذرات والمواد الصلبة، ومن أجل المقارنة بين النظريات والتجارب العلمية. ولأن تعقيد توزيع الالكترونيات يؤدي إلى تغييرات طفيفة في خصائص الذرات والجزئيات والمواد الصلبة، فقد حدث تفاوت بصورة عامة بين النظرية والتجربة بلغت نسبته 1%، وقد أحرزت مؤتمرات ساجامور تقدمًا في تقليل نسبة هذا التفاوت. بدأ عقد هذه المؤتمرات كل ثلاثة أعوام منذ عام 1963، وقد عقدت في نيويورك، وفرنسا، وروسيا، وفنلندا، والبرتغال، وألمانيا، وكندان واليابان، وإنجلترا وجذبت إليها آلافًا من المشاركين.
يصف ريتشارد وايس- أول من نظم هذه المؤتمرات- تطور الأشعة السينية ومجسات النيوترونات والبوزيترونات التي نستخدمها في هذه القياسات. وقد تعاون وايس في أبحاث علمية مع علماء مثل: فرانسيس جينكينز بجامعة كاليفورنيا في بيركلي، وسايمون باسترناك في مختبر بروكهيفين الوطني، وجون سلاتر، وبي وارين بمعهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا، وبيتر وولفارث بالكلية الملكية بلندن، وإم هارت بكلية الملك بلندن، وسير نيفل موت بمختبر كافينديش.
