يحاول هذا الكتاب إلقاء الضوء على الأوضاع الإقتصادية والإجتماعية السائدة في مصر عشية ثورة 25 يناير، حيث يشير هذا الكتاب في ثناياه إلى عمق التناقضات الموجودة في المجتمع والإقتصاد المصريين في كافة جوانبهما، مع محاولة توثيق تلك الأوضاع بأحدث الأدلة الإحصائية المتاحة. ولأنه دراسة في الإقتصاد الإجتماعي، فقد حاول مؤلفه "د. محمود عبد الفضيل" أن يرصد أزمة الطبقة الوسطى منذ بداية الألفية الجديدة، وظهور درجة عالية من الثراء الفاحش وتبلور مجتمعات مغلقة للصفوة حيث يعيشون في حالة إنفصام كامل عن المجتمع ومشاكله المعيشية، كما يلقى الكتاب الضوء على الرأسمالية الجديدة التي تكونت منذ التسعينات والتي كانت في معظم الأحوال في تطورها ومسارها نوعاً من رأسمالية المحاسيب نتيجة صلاتها الوثيقة بالسلطة ومراكز صنع القرار.
