هو قاص وروائي وناقد وكاتب مسرحي لبناني، ولد في العاصمة اللبنانية بيروت عام 1948.
كتب عشر روايات ترجمت إلى العديد من اللغات وثلاث مسرحيات وله العديد من الكتابات النقدية.

هذا الكتاب هو مجموعة من القراءات النقدية التي كتبت خلال فترة طويلة نسبياً 1972-1981، وهو يضم حقلاً واسعاً من الاهتمامات والمتابعات النقدية، إنه لا يطمح إلى أن يكون اكثر من شهادة في مرحلة أدبية تميزت بترجرجها وبكونها عتبة للانتقال من أجواء ما سًمي بحداثة الخمسينات إلى مرحلة مليئة بالاحتمالات والأسئلة، أن تجمع هذه المقالات في كتاب هو بمعنى ما، محاولة للإعلان عن نهاية مرحلة، محاولة للإشارة إلى جديد ملتبس، إلى مرحلة تنتهي فيها المراجع الجاهزة أو شبه الجاهزة، وتعلن فيها الكتابة عن كونها مرجع نفسها، بمعنى أن الحاضر يجب أن يكون حاضراً، وأن يشكل في نفسه مرجعاً لقراءة الماضي واستشراق المستقبل، تندرج هذه المقالات في إطار البحث داخل النص الأدبي نفسه. هلا لا يعني أنها متحررة من أي نسق أيديولوجي، فكل تأويل نقدي يميل بشكل أو بآخر، إلى مبنى أيديولوجي، أو إلى منظور عام، لكن الطموح هو أن تصل القراءة النقدية إلى شفافية اكتشاف التركيب البنائي للنص الأدبي، وفي عملية الاكتشاف هذه، لا يحاكم التأويل النقدي النص فقط، بل يحاكم أيضاً أدواته نفسها.
