حين ينهار زواجه بلا سبب واضح سنة 2007 يحاول مصطفى الشوربجي، المحرر بمؤسسة صحفية كبيرة، أن يستغل خطوط سيره اليومية في رسم خريطة للقاهرة يسترد بها إحساسه بالأمان. وفيما يتعرض لمغامرات عجائبية تتضمن لقاء بشبح السلطان العثماني الأخير، يكتشف مصطفى أنه شخصيا في مركز صراع سري ممتد بين الهوية الإسلامية وأعدائها عبر القرون، وأن له دورًا في بعث الأمة. خلال ثلاثة أسابيع بين انفصاله عن زوجته وسفره إلى بيروت لتنفيذ المهمة الكبرى التي يكلف بها، ستكون كل رحلة من رحلات مصطفى داخل القاهرة خطوة في وعيه بدوره هذا- وبالمدينة. كما أن لكل من الشخصيات الحاضرة في حياة مصطفى تأثيرا جوهريا في الصراع. وحتى خريطة القاهرة التي يرسمها ستكون مطابقة لطغرى السلطان العثماني الأخير عشية انهزام العثمانيين في جولة انتهت بسقوط دولتهم "والطغرى هي الاسم الذي يطلق على ختم السلطان"، ولم يكن ظهور السلطان لمصطفى في هذا التوقيت بالذات سوى إيذان ببدء الجولة التالية.
