في هذا الكتاب دراسة لظاهرة حضرية، منذ نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية حتى منتصف الثمانينات من القرن الماضي، ذلك أن هذه الفترة تشكل مرحلة جديدة في حياة الأمة. وإذا كنا وجدنا في الشعر العربي القديم مقارنات بين حياة الحضر وحياة البداوة، فإننا واجدون في الشعر العربي الحديث مقارنات بين حياة المدينة وحياة الريف. فقد تركت حياة المدينة آثاراً كبيرة في وجدان الشاعر العربي الحديث، عبّر عن ردود فعله أزاءها من خلال تصويره لها وتحديد مواقفه منها.
وهذا ما قام به د. زهير عبيدات حيث اتخذ من النص الشعري أساساً لدراسته ومن الدراسة الداخلية منهجاً ومرتكزاً ومنطلقاً، فكل رأي في هذه الدراسة قام من بين يديه عدد وفير من النصوص، فالنص الشعري هو الذي وجه البحث إلى ما فيه من آراء، وليست الآراء المسبقة هي التي قادت البحث إلى النص. وهكذا نهضت هذه الدراسة بواجب الشمولية والتخصّص، وتناولتها من أبعاد مختلفة لترصد تجربة الشاعر العربي من المدينة، والكشف عن صورتها، وموقفه منها، كما يتبدّى في شعره. فهي لا تؤرخ لهذه الظاهرة، وإن كان التأريخ أحد أهدافها ومناهجها. وهي تجيب باختصار عن الأسئلة التالية: كيف تبدو صورة المدينة في الشعر العربي الحديث؟ وما موقف الشاعر العربي من المدينة من خلال شعره؟ وما العوامل المؤثرة في الصورة والموقف؟.
