يمثل الزمن بعداً أساسياً ومميزاً للنصوص الحكائية بصفة عامة، ذلك لأن الحكى والسرد يرتكزان على الزمن. بينما يشكل الزمن، مع نماذج الرواية الجديدة، مستوى محورياً في القص، تترتب عليه عناصر التشويق والإيقاع، ويقيم نظام القص المتعدد في الترتيب والتواتر، في الارتجاع والاستباق، في الاستطراد والاقتضاب، ومثلما لم يعد الزمن خطى الاتجاه، لم يعد ذلك أحادي البعد، بانطوائه على مستويات وأنساق زمنية متعددة ومختلفة، متسقة ومتجادلة، منظمة وفوضاوية، متضافرة ومتعارضة، متصلة ومنفصلة، خارجية وداخلية، موضوعية وفلسفية عقلانية وجنوبية، حقيقية وخيالية، ولما كان وعي الإنسان بالزمن منعكساً في حياته فقد تحقق تجلية الأمثل في رواية "تيار الوعي" وتيار الوعي/الشعور، وهو-في الأصل مصطلح يستمد مرجعيته من علم النفس، حيث دل به "وليم جمس" على جريان الذهن بلا انتهاء مع تيار الأفكار الحرة ومن ثم تمتاز رواية "تيار الوعي" بتجسيد "وعي الشخصية" الخاص بنفسها، في استدعائها الحر لترياق التذكر، ولينابيع الذاكرة، ولضروب الذكريات، ومحطمة بذلك نظام الزمن المرتب/المنطقي/الخطى، ونظام التسلسل التتابعي الكرونولوجي للأزمنة، لتؤسس-في المقابل-أسلبة خاصة للزمن، وتزميناً جديداً للرواية، وهي الإضافة النوعية التي وضعت الزمن الروائي في أسلوبية متعددة التجسيد، والدلالات، والمسارات، والأنظمة. في هذه الدراسة يعتمد د. مراد عبد الرحمن مبروك ست روايات متمايزة تمثل أنماط رواية تيار الوعي ما بين عامي 1967 و1994، راصداً-عبرها-التراتب الزمني، من حيث السوابق واللواحق، ثم التتابع الزمني، من حيث التوافق والتوقف والقفز، ثم ما يعرف بـ "التواتر الزمني" من حيث الإفراد والتعدد والنمطية، وفقاً لأوضاع الراوي، ولحالاته الشعورية وأخيراً الدلالة الزمنية، من حيث تجسيد جدلية الزمن والذات، أو ديمومة الزمن وعدمية الذات.
والدراسة إذ تجمع-زمنياً بين الروايات عربية متباينة، تخلص إلى أن رواية "تيار الوعي" هي أكثر نماذج الرواية العربية تشكيلاً للزمن بنائياًُ ودلالياً، فضلاً عن خصوصية فنية إيحائية، هي الأبرز من لدن اتجاهات ونماذج الرواية العربية.
