ليسمح لي عزيزي القارىء الكريم أن أطرح في هذا الكتاب شيئا من آرائي في الفن المسرحي عموما وفي المسرح العربي والعراقي خصوصا. هذه الآراء التي تبلورت عبر أكثر من خمسين سنة من التجربة من عملي المسرحي ومن دراستي. انها آراء ليست حاسمة بل قابلة للنقاش والتصحيح ولكنها تعكس حتما واقعا مسرحيا ساد في مراحل زمنية متتابعة من الحياة المسرحية. ومن تلك الآراء ما يتعلق بتأصيل الفن المسرحي وبلورة هوية خاصة به يدعى أمة من الأمم. وأهمية ذلك في مدى تقدم تلك الأمة وثمر حضاراتها وقد توصلنا بعد حين إن هوية مسرح أية أمة ترتبط بنتاج مؤلفيها المسرحيين، وإذا كانت بعض الأمم قد افتخرت باصالة منها المسرحي وقدم جذوره وان مثل تلك الأصالة قد لا تكون متوافرة لدى امم أخرى وليس من تراثها ما هو مختص في الفن المسرحي، وذلك ليس عيبا ولا مثلبة فقد تتميز تلك الأمم بحقول اخرى من الثقافة. وفي كل الاحوال فقد اصبح المسرح فنا كونيا لا يقتصر على هذا البلد دون الآخر واكبر دليل على ذلك ان مسرحيات شكسبير على سبيل المثال تمثل في مختلف انحاء العالم وان مؤلفقين اوربيين قد اعتمدوا في مؤلفاتهم على فنون ادبية لامم اخرى. ويكفي ان نذكر اوغست سترندبرغ في مسرحية (حذاء ابو القاسم الطنبوري) وبرتولد بريخت في مسرحية (الرجل الطيب من سشوان).
