ينطلق مطهري في كتابه هذا عن الإمام، من بداية فحواها أن كلمة "الإمام" لا تنطوي في حدّ ذاتها على مفهوم مقدس. فالإمام هو الذي يقتدى به، وهو المتقدم على القوم، محقاً كان أو مبطلاً. ثم ينطلق مطهري للحديث عن ثلاث مراتب للإمامة تبعاً لدور الإمام في كل مرتبة. وهو يقول: "للإمامة ثلاث درجات، ما لم نفكك بينها في البحث نقع في مشكلة".
