يدور موضوع الكتاب حول حياة وشعر العالم اللغوي "الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي" وبالتعريف هو: أبو عبد الرحمن الخليل بن أحمد بن عمر بن تميم الفراهيدي أو الفرهودي الأزدي من أزد عمان، من أئمة اللغة والأدب. عاش في أواخر العصر الأموي وأوائل العصر العباسي، وهو واضع أسس علم النحو في اللغة العربية، ومبتكر علم المعاجم، وعلم العروض وله بالإضافة إلى ذلك شعر هادف متنائر بين أمهات كتب التراجم والأدب والتاريخ.
وفي هذا العمل يقف أ.د "سعود محمود عبد الجابر" عند شعر الخليل والنصوص الشعرية التي وردت في بعض الكتب المخطوطة أو المطبوعة حديثاً، والتي لم ترد في الشعر المجموع سابقاً، وعمل على جمعها من جديد ودراستها دراسة فنية وهي تزيد على (تسعة وستين نصاً شعرياً له، وثمانية نصوص تنسب له ولغيره من الشعراء، ويقع هذا الشعر في ستة ومئتي بيت وبه زيادة كبيرة على الشعر المجموع والمنشور...".
ومن شعر الخليل بن أحمد نقرأ: وقبلك داوي الطبيب المريض، فعاش المريض ومات الطبيب/ فكن مستعداً لدار الفناء، فإن الذي هو آتٍ قريب.
جاء الكتاب في مقدمة وقسمين: تتضمن المقدمة حياته، شعره، شيوخه، تلاميذه، مصنفاته، شعر الزهد، شعر الحكمة، الخلاق والقيم الإسلامية، ومنهج التحقيق. أما القسم الأول فجاء فيما يختص بشعر الخليل بن احمد وبحور الشعر العربي. ثم القسم الثاني، فيما ينسب إلى الخليل بن أحمد وإلى غيره من الشعراء.
