يتحدث الدكتور "محمود بن الشريف" في هذا الكتاب عن الفن القصصي، حيث يستعرض مفهوم القصة، وأنواعها، وعناصرها وشخصياتها، من ثم يتوقف عند الأسطورة نشأتها، تعريفها، تطورها، بعد ذلك يتحدث عن المقامة، فيقول: المقامة أشبه بالقصة... لها بطل وهمي يروي المؤلف على لسانه ما شاهده من حوادث وما سمعه من أخبار، أما غرضها فهو الموعظة أو النكتة المستملحة أو الألغازر اللغوية والنحوية بألفاظ غريبة غير مستملحة.
وبعد انتهاءه من التعريفات والعموميات يدخل لموضوع القصة العربية فيتحدث عن القصص الشعبي والقصص الإخباري، ويدرس نصيب الشعر العربي من القصص، وأخيراً يتوقف عند خصائص القصص العربي. هذا كله تحدث عنه القسم الأول من هذا البحث أما القسم الثاني فخصصه للحديث عن القصة في "القرآن الكريم"، محدداً أغراض القصة القرآنية وأهدافها وألوانها.
