إن الإهتمام بدراسة التاريخ الحضاري على مر العصور والأجيال عامل هام من عوامل التقدم الإنساني، ذلك أن الحضارة ليست حكرا على شعب معين، أو منطقة معينة، أو بلد معين، إنما هي تراث إنساني تتقاسمه كل الجماعات الإنسانية على مختلف أجناسها ومعتقداتها ومآكلها ومشاريها ومكانها وزمنها.
وهي متعددة النواحي، ذلك أن التجربة الإنسانية مهما بعدت في أعماق التاريخ لا تختلف عن التجربة في أيامنا هذه إلا في بعض التفاصيل.
وهذا المجلد لتاريخ الحضارة السريانية لم يكن الأول من نوعه كما أنه لن يكون الأخير، لكنه بادرة تجدد في عملية ربط إتجاهات الحضارة السريانية بعضها ببعض، ومن ثم بالثقافات والحضارات الأخرى في منطقة الهلال الخصيب والمشرق وعالم البحر المتوسط وصولا إلى أطراف الشرق الأوسط، وتأريخا للجغرافية التاريخية في معظم الوجوه.
وقد روى المؤلف في أسلوب تصويري قصة الحضارة السريانية، التي كانت في عصور سابقة، قبل الميلاد وبعده أم الدنيا في الحضارات، والتي تمثلت على بقعة واسعة من الكرة الأرضية، بحيث حاول وصف الماضي وكأنه حي، لتبدو الصورة التي رسمها متناسبة الأجزاء تناسبا أقرب إلى الصحة والواقع.
وإن ما حصل في سومر وأكاد وبابل وأشور، ونصيبين، والرها، وانطاكية وغيرها من بلدان الهلال الخصيب وهذا المشرق، ما زال يؤثر إلى حد ما في حياة الناس وعقولهم، بحيث كانت هذه البلدان وهذه المدن المركز الأكبر للشؤون البشرية والإنسانية والثقافية التي وصل إلينا علمها على مختلف أشكاله وتلاوينه، وقد استمدت منها شعوب كثيرة ثقافتها على مدى قرون طويلة.
وقد دعم دراسته بمراجع موثوقة ومأخوذة من أمهات الكتب التاريخية والموسوعات، والدوريات، والمخطوطات والوثائق.
