ما هو التصوف؟ متى بدأ، ومن أين جاءته هذه التسمية؟ أسئلة جوابها في الإسلام الذي جاء به محمد بن عبد الله رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بأمر من ربه تعالى، حتى ليمكن اختصار التصوف كله بكلمات: التصوف هو الإسلام، والإسلام هو التصوف.
ويمكن أن نترك القلم ليصول ويجول، ويبحث ويسجل، وللفكر ليبدع مرتكزاً على تاريخ الأوائل من الصوفيين الذين كانوا من صحابة رسول الله محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم الذين استقوا من نبعه الشريف وارتكزوا على تعاليمه الفاضلة، وساروا على هديه بدءاً بأبي بكر الصديق وعلي بن أبي طالب وسلمان الفارسي وأبي ذر الغفاري ومن هؤلاء الأوائل جعفر الصادق والحسن البصري ومنهم داود الطائي ومعروف الكرخي والسري والجنيد، إلى سلسلة من الأسماء كثيرة طابت مغارسها وعطرت الأجواء عطاءاتها، وما زال الزمن يتحفنا بأسماء عطرت صفحات التاريخ حتى يومنا هذا، وكلها نابعة من الإسلام ومستقية من نوره.
ويمثلهم قول الشيخ عبد القادر الجيلاني رحمه الله: "من رأيتموه يمشي على الماء أو يطير في الهواء، ووجدتم عنده ما يخالف الشرع الشريف فاعلموا أنه دجال كذاب أخطأ الحق والصواب" وما أروع هؤلاء الذين آمنوا بربهم حق الإيمان وزادهم ربهم هدى.
قال بعض المؤرخين: بدأ التصوف مبكراً في الإسلام وسمي المتصوفة بأولئك الفقراء من الصحابة الذين اتخذوا من الصفة في مسجد النبي مأوى لهم يصلون ويصومون ويعبدون الله ويعيشون على الكفاف مما يتحفهم به رسول الله وأصحابه الكرام.
وقال آخرون: سمي الصوفيون بهذا الاسم لأنهم اتخذوا لباس الصوف شعاراً لهم متخذين من الحديث النبوي القائل: "اخشوشنوا فإن النهم لا تدوم" شعاراً وطريقاً يسلكونها.
وعلى امتداد الأيام كانت للصوفية مراكز، ولمعت أسماء، ووثق بأصحاب الطرق كثير من المسلمين.
