في الماضي كما في الحاضر اختلف وولا يزال يختلف الاقتصاديون حول كثير من الموضوعات والظواهر الاقتصادية, إن كان من زاوية النظرة التي ينظرون من خلالها إلى الحدث أو في طريقة تعليل وتحليل الظواهر الاقتصادية, أو حتى في مجال الأدوات المستخدمة في الدراسة و التحليل. فمن المعروف, بأن تحليلاتهم تختلف ومعالجتهم تتنوع للظاهرة الواحدة, مثالنا في ذلك: التضخم, البطالة... الخ. لذا يفرض مثل هذا الوضع أن يقوم البعض بتقديم مساهمات وبمحاولات تهدف إلى شرح وتبسيط وبالأحرى تبويب وتصنيف النظريات والمدارس الاقتصادية المختلفة, علاوة على الاقتصاديين أنفسهم. وعلى الرغم من معرفتنا بصعوبة مثل هذا العمل إلا أننا قررنا الخوض فيه, فاليوم أكثر من أي وقت مضى نحن بحاجة ماسة لمعرفة النظريات والمدارس الاقتصادية الرئيسية ومن ثم التطورات التي حدثت فيها بما يتناسب والتطور الاقتصادي العام. ضمن هذا المنطق, قسم هذا الكتاب إلى أربعة أقسام أساسية, هي: كينز وأتباعه, سميث وورثته, ماركس وتلامذته, وأخيرا الهراطقة على الطريقة الشومبيترية. في الفصلين الأول والثاني من كل قسم, ويقدم شرحا مبسطا لوجهة نظر رئيس المدرسة والمنطق الخاص بها. أما في الفصل الثالث والملاحق من كل قسم فيخوض في بعض التفاصيل الهامة لكل مدرسة.
