يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوع تربية الأطفال بطريقة إيجابية، وكل قسم يتناول مرحلة من مراحل نمو الطفل في طفولته (من عمر يوم إلى 6 سنوات). وفيه تقدم "ليندا بلير" الأخصائية في علم النفس السريري مجموعة من النظريات والنصائح العملية. فعرض النظرية بدون اقتراح خطوات لا ينفع الأهل كثيراً ويكون من دون فائدة عملية، كما أن إعطاء نصيحة بدون الاستناد إلى نظرية لا يقنع. لذا، يبدأ كل قسم من أقسام الكتاب الثلاثة بفصل يتناول ما أظهرته دراسات علم نفس الأطفال، ويتبعه فصل آخر عمَا يمكنك فعله لتعزيز النَمو يشكل إيجابي، ويليه فصل يتكلم عمَا يمكن للأهل فعله عند ظهور المشاكل. ذلك أن التجربة تقول أنه من المستحيل أن يربي الأهل أطفالهم من دون أن يواجهوا المشاكل.
هناك معلومات قيَمة سوف يجدها الأهل في هذا الكتاب منها مثلاً: تعلَم كيف تعزوز ثقة الطفل بالعالم، وأهمية اللعب، محاولة النظر من منظور الطفل قبل اتخاذ القرار حول ما إذا كان هناك مشكلة تحتاج لحل أولاً، وأنه لا يمكن تصميم أطفالكم مثلما تريدون، وبإنه بالإمكان القيام بتغير إيجابي أو سلبي، وأن الطفل يمكن أن يقوم بأفعال غير متوقعة نتيجة طبعه الفطري... إلى آخر ذلك من موضوعات تخص الطفل في سنواته الستة الأولى.
