تناول هذا الكتاب للموضوع الشعري عند جيل الثاني من شعراء الشعر الجديد في مصر، فقد اعتمدت على ستة شعراء، جعلت منهم نماذج لهذا الجيل، وهم: أمل دنقل، محمد مهران السيد، محمد عفيفي مطر، محمد إبراهيم أبو سنة، فاروق شوشة، أحمد سويلم، حيث يمثلون هذا الجيل الكبير العدد، من أقدم أبنائه إلى أحدثهم، كما أنهم يشكلون معظم الاتجاهات الفكرية والفنية، الغالبة على شعر هذا الجيل، الذي كان الاتجاه إلى دراسة شعره قائمًا على عدد من الحيثيات المتعلقة بكيان هذا الجيل المتامسك ونجاحه في النهوض بالقصيدة العربية المعاصرة.
أما الموضوع الشعري، فقد وضع في الاعتبار دائمًا، أنه قد يكون مراوغًا، أو من الصعب تحديده؛ نظرًا لتداخل الرؤى والمضامين، كما أن المحاور قد تتعدد داخل القصيدة الواحدة، من أجل ذلك كان تناول قضية (الموضوع الشعري)، محتاجًا إلى تعدد القراءات، والولوج من المرحلة الاستكشافية لعالم الشعر، إلى ما بعدها من مراحل الرصد والتقصي والفهم والتحليل، خاصة أن القصيدة الحديثة والمعاصرة، تتميز بتكنيكات فنية عالية وكثافة وعمق بالغين، مما قد يلتبس معه النص، أو يبدو عصيًا على التصنيف.
ومما عنى به في هذا الكتاب العناية بطبيعة التجربة الشعرية وتعدد الرؤى، ومراعاة القيم التعبيرية والفنية في تحليل النصوص، على ألا يتحول ذلك إلى الشروحات العقيمة، وعمليات نثر الشعر، التي لا تخدم أهداف الدراسة، وذلك مع ملاحظة مناحي التميز والتفرد، وسمات التحديث، ورصد الفروق بين الشعراء في معالجتهم للموضوع الواحد.
