قدم لغويونا القدامى مادة أبانت عما في أنفسهم، وصاغوا عالمهم في قوائم الكلم وذلك من خلال المعاجم التي تغنوا في تصنيفها، وقد جعلوا لكل مسمى اسماً أو أكثر، أما نحن اليوم فحاضر يقتات بماضيه، ولا نملك ما نعطيه للغد. وللدكتور رياض زكي قاسم رغبة يبثها في هذا الكتاب، وهي تتملكه فيختص ما في بيانها في دعوته إلى صناعة معجمية تجوز الفرد مهما أوتي من عبقرية، وتتخطى التقليد الذي يعيشه المعجم تحت عنوان المحافظة، فليس محافظة التقليد مع الخطأ.
لذا كان مسوقاً بادئ ذي بدء، على صفحات هذا الكتاب إلى تعريف القارئ العربي بالمعجم قديمه وحديثه، من حيث حدّه، ومنهجه، ومصادر مادته، وواقع بنيته، ومطلب المعنى فيه وعيوبه. ثم، وجد في سياق هذه البحوث فكرة التطبيق ضرورة، فجعلها مخصوصة بمعجم الطفل العربي، وأجرى عليها دراسة ميدانية، قوامها الاستمارة والإحصاء واعتماد الكمبيوتر إرادة رصد تواتر الكلم في الرقم الأقصى والرقم الأدنى وما بينهما. وكان قد وقع على مجموعة نصوص، تتناول قضايا المعجم من كل جانب، فأنزل في فصل خاص، ليتبصر بها القارئ والباحث، ولتكون صوى في الطريق الطويل.
