طبع هذا الكتاب لأول مرة علم (1366هـ/ 1947م)، وهو من أهم المؤلّفات الرائدة خلال النصف الأول من القرن العشرين في حقل الفلسفة الإسلامية وتاريخها، مؤلّفه هو الدكتور إبراهيم بيومي مدكور؛ أحد أهم الرواد العرب في دراسة الفلسفة الإسلامية في العصر الحديث.
أصل هذا الكتاب فصول متتابعة نشرت في مجلّة "الرسالة". رسم المؤلّف فيه منهجاً لدراسة الفلسفة الإسلامية، ثم طبقه تطبيقاً كاملاً على ثلاث من نظرياتها الكبرى، هي: نظرية السعادة، ونظرية النبوة، والنفس وخلودها.
درس المؤلّف هذه النظريات أولاً في بيئتها وظروفها الخاصة، وشرحها على لسان القائلين بها، ثم ربطها بما سبقها من أشباه ونظائر، وبيّن ما لها من أثر في الفلسفات اللاحقة التي تمتد إلى العصر الحديث.
أما في الكتاب الثاني فقد أضاف المؤلف قضيتين، هما: الألوهية، وحرية الإدارة، بالإضافة إلى دراسته لتاريخ الفلسفة الإسلامية وخصائصها، وموقف المستشرقين منها، والدفاع عنها ضد منتقديها من الشرق والغرب.
