وهذا الكتاب ثمرات طيبة لجهد غير عادي قامت به المؤلفة في هذا الاتجاه، ويتكون الكتاب من مقدمة وسبعة فصول وخاتمة، وفيما يلي عرض موجز لهذه المحتويات: [الفصل الأول: طبيعة اللغة، الفصل الثاني: الأسس النظرية التي يستند إليها المدخل: "الفكري- الوظيفي- اللغوي" نظرية اللغة ومقتضيات الوصف الأول، الفصل الثالث: الأسس النظرية التي يستند إليها المدخل: "الفكري- الوظيفي- اللغوي" نظرية اللغة ومقتضيات الوصف الثاني، الفصل الرابع: الأسس النظرية التي يستند إليها المدخل: "الفكري- الوظيفي- اللغوي" نظرية اللغة ومقتضيات الوصف الثالث، الفصل الخامس: الأسس النظرية التي يستند إليها المدخل: "الفكري- الوظيفي- اللغوي" نظريات التعلم والتعليم، الفصل السادس: الأسس النظرية التي يستند إليها المدخل: "الفكري- الوظيفي- اللغوي"، الفصل السابع: مهارات التفكير المحورية].
وقد عنيت المؤلفة بوصف واقع تعليم اللغة العربية في المرحلة الابتدائية، ثم قدمت قرائن وأدلة كافية تؤكد انخفاض درجة الاهتمام بالتفكير في تعليم اللغة العربية مستندة في ذلك إلى مرئيات أولى العزم وأهل الثقة في مجالي التعليم بعامة وتعليم اللغة بخاصة. ثم دعمت هذه الأقوال بتحليل محتوى مضامين كتاب "اقرأ وعبر" المقرر على تلاميذ الصف الرابع الابتدائي، وكراسة الأنشطة والتدريبات المصاحبة لها؛ لتستخلص من نتائج. هذا التحليل الكمية والكيفية مؤشرات على مدى العناية بمهارات التفكير. ولجأت في هذا الصدد- أيضًا- إلى مراجعة نتائج بعض أحدث البحوث العربية في مجال طرق تعليم اللغة العربية في مراحل التعليم المختلفة.
