لقد عرف العالم العربي في العهد الحديث والمعاصر تطوراً دورياً يكمن في تعاقب التخلف والاستعمار والمقاومة. وبقي طوال هذه الحقبة من تاريخه أي على مدى زهاء الخمسة قرون يتخبط في هذه الحلقة المفرغة وذلك منذ انطلاق النهضة الأوروبية الحديثة واختلال موازين القوى بين الغرب والشرق الناجم عنها. وقد استفحلت هذه الهوة في القرن الثامن عشر وبلغت أوجها في القرن التاسع عشر مع الثورة الصناعية التي حققتها البلدان الغربية. فبينما تقدم الغرب اقتصادياً واجتماعياً وسياسياً بقي العالم العربي متخلفاً في جميع هذه المجالات وبالتالي عاجزاً، رغم بعض المحاولات، عن النهوض بمجتمعاته والخروج بها من حالة الضعف والهوان. وبذلك أصبح قابلاً للاستعمار فسقط تدريجياً تحت هيمنة القوى الغربية. غير أن الشعوب العربية رفضت الاحتلال الأجنبي وعملت على التصدي له ومقاومته دفاعاً عن الحرية والكرامة والأرض.
وقد حرصنا على دراسة هذه الحقبة من تاريخ العالم العربي بكل ما يمكن من الموضوعية وذلك بتجتب التعصب والقراءات الإيديولوجية التي غالباً ما تحجب عنا الحقيقة التاريخية. كما أن إبراز تقصير الطرف العربي ونقاط ضعفه هو في نهاية الأمر تحديد للمسؤوليات واستخلاص للعبر.
