إن هناك البعض من عادات وتقاليد الشعب المصري مثار إهتمام العلماء والباحثين والناس العاديين على حد سواء، كما لا تزال هذه العادات والتقاليد غير معروفة في مدلولها ومغزاها حتى الآن.
من الثابت أن المجتمع المصري يكاد ينفرد بظاهرة سكنى المقابر، فإنه لا يمكن فهم هذه الظاهرة إلاّ في ضوء الخصوصية التاريخية والثقافية لهذا المجتمع، أن المجتمع قد شهد نشأة وتطور هذه الظاهرة في بعض العصور التاريخية، كما شهد تدهورها وإضمحلالها في البعض الآخر.
ولعل الهدف المباشر والرئيسي لهذا الكتاب يتمثل في محاولة إلقاء الضوء على الظروف الثقافة والإقتصادية والإجتماعية والسياسية التي أدّت إلى تبلور ظاهرة سكنى المقابر في عاصمة مصر في العصر الفرعوني، وعودتها من جديد في العصر الإسلامي.
وإلقاء الضوء على الظروف والعوامل التي أدّت إلى عودتها من جديد في العصر الحديث، ودراسة سكان هذا المجتمع والوقوف على طبيعة تكوينهم الإجتماعي والإقتصادي والديموجرافي والثقافي النوعي.
