ولم أر مبدعاً يمتلك شعوراً بالهيبة أمام الكتابة مثلة، كما أقدم على إعمال قلمه يستحضر أمامه عظماء المبدعين من المتنبي والمعري والجاحظ إلى دستويفسكي وبروست وستاندال فترتجف يده أمام حجم التحدي.
كان ناقداً حازماً متشدداً وفاضحاً لكل إدعاء إلى حد السخرية الجارحة، وجد الطريق أمامه شبه مغلق فما كان له غير أن يعرّي نفسه ويمارس عليها معرفته النقدية بكل ما امتلك من أدوات.
قد لا تقرأ رسالة أشد إفصاحاً وأشد ألماً على النفس كرسالته التي يوجهها إلى ذاته في هذه السيرة فهي صورة جلية عن كل ما كان يعانيه من مشكلات خاصة وعامة.
كان يمتلك عقلاً جباراً، أسئلته الوجودية لا قرار لها كعطائه الباذخ للآخرين، شغفه بالثقافة مخيف بحجمه ومعد بالتماس معه، يستفزه الإبتذال في كل شيء وتفشي القبح في الحياة اليوميةً إلى حد الغليان والثورة، لكنه حين يتحدث عن قصيدة أو نص نثري بليغ أو قطعة موسيقية يضطرب ويمسح الدموع من عينيه متمتماً بخجل: "آسف آسف" فتشعر بأن هذه القامة الممتلئة المديدة قد تحولت إلى ذوب خالص من المشاعر، وسرعان ما يعقب ضاحكاً: "الضعف البشري ليس عيباً"، أقول له: "بل هو جوهر الإنسانية"، فيرتاح لردي ويتمادى في الكشف عن معاناته الشخصيّة.
