"يتطرق المؤلفان في الكتاب إلى التفاعلات التي تقوم بين الأبوين والرضيع بشتى تجلياتها وإشكالاتها، وما قد يقترن بها أو يترتب عليها من اضطرابات نفسية، ويندرج هذا المبحث ضمن العلاج النفسي الولادي، الذي يعد مدخلاً إبستمولوجياً لدراسة الرضيع من زاوية علم النفس المرضي، ومن جهة كونه موضوعاً للدراسة السريرية، انصرف المؤلفان إلى تفصيل القو في المقاربة السريرية للرضيع، مشيرين إلى خمس سمات كبرى ما فتئت تغنيها وتثريها، وهي قيامها على الملاحظة والتفاعل واعتدادها بالتحويل العكسي وبالوضعية وبالبعد التاريخي، ثم عمدا إلى وصف دقيق لقدرات الرضيع، الحسية والحركية والاجتماعية والإدراكية، وإعمال النظر في قدرات الأبوين ودينامية الحمل النفسية، مع التنويه بمفهومي الطفل الخيالي والطفل الاستيهامي، حيث يراد بالأول ذلك الطفل الذي يستطيع الأبوان أن يتمثلاه ويتخيلاه بسهولة، بينما يرتبط الثاني باستيهامات الأبوين، ومن ثم فهو ينتمي إليهما، وبعد الولادة، سيتعين عليهما أن يوفقا بين وجود الطفل الخيالي والاستيهامي وبين رضيعهما الحقيقي. إن فائدة هذا الكتاب تكمن في كونه يرسم بوضوح وبهاجس تعليمي بين معالم الوضع الراهن في مجال البحث في العلاج النفسي للرضيع، الذي كثيراً ما يستند تنظيراً وممارسة إلى إسهامات التحليل النفسي".
