يشكل الشطرنج في أيامنا أحد جوانب الثقافة العلمية، إضافة إلى كونه ركناً أساسياً من أركان الرياضة الفكرية، وغدا مادة يتعلمها التلامذة في مدارسهم في كثير من دول العالم إلى جانب المواد العلمية الأخرى، فارضاً إحترامه على كل المهتمين بالتربية الذهنية للأجيال الصاعدة.
ورغم أن العرب كانوا رواداً لهذه اللعبة في العصور الغابرة، فإن المكتبة العربية تشكو حالياً نقصاً في كتب الشطرنج المتخصصة لكل الأعمار والمستويات.
إن هذا العمل الذي أضعه بين يدي القارئ العربي هو جزء من سلسلة طويلة أنوي المساهمة بها آملاً أن تسدّ بعض النقص في مكتبتنا العربية، ولا أدعي في عملي هذا وضع نظريات جديدة في لعبة الشطرنج، تماماً كما لا يحتاج واضعو الكتب التعليمية في المدارس والجامعات، إلى إكتشافات علمية جديدة، فالأمر يتعلق بمنهاج وأسلوب خاصين في إيصال معلومات شطرنجية ضرورية إلى القارئ علماً بأن بعض هذه المعلومات يعود إلى عشرات السنين.
وإذ اعتذر من القراء ذوي المستوى الرفيع في لعبة الشطرنج، الذين سيجدون بكل تأكيد فائدة كبيرة في قراءة هذا الكتاب، أعترف بأن الأسلوب المتبع في كتابته يغلب على جزء منه الطابع التعليمي، حيث حضّرته بنفس الطريقة التي أحضر بها بعض المقررات لتدريسها في الجامعة.
