هذا الكتاب ثمرة بحوث في موضوع "المفارقة والأدب" شغلت به منذ بداية التسعينات، وقد راعني في بداية تعاملي مع الموضوع قلة الدراسات العربية فيه، في مقابل دراسات غربية كثيرة، تناولته محوراً رئيساً، ووظفته تقنية حية وفعالة في دراسات تطبيقية ونظرية، على امتداد عقود طويلة.
وقد خططت منذ بداية اهتمامي بالموضوع أن يأتي على هذا النحو: الفصل الأول بحث في النظرية بشكل عام، يعرف بالمفارقة مصطلحاً، ويبين التطور التاريخي لدلالة المصطلح في التراث النقدي العربي، لأوضح أن المصطلح، وإن كان قد استخدم تحت مسميات أخرى، فإن نقادنا القدماء قد التفوا إليه وعالجوه بشيء من الإهتمام تحت تلك المسميات. وأنا أدرك أن كل جانب من الجوانب التي وردت في هذا الفصل يشكل مجالاً رحباً لدراسات عديدة، فإنما قصدت إلى أن أطرق جوانب في الموضوع تؤسس لدراسات بعدها. وهذا ما فعلته في الفصل الثاني الذي ضم البحوث التطبيقية التي تناولت فيها شعر محمود درويش، أبرز الشعراء العرب المعاصرين فتتبعت روافد المفارقة عنده، ثم أبرز أنماطها في شعره.
وتناول رواية لأبرز كتاب الرواية العربية، نجيب محفوظ، ووضحت الدور الذي قامت به المفارقة في الرواية من خلال قيامها بتشكيل لغة الرواية، وتشكيل الأحداث الرئيسة فيها، مما جعل المفارقة هنا تلعب دور "العنصر المهيمن" الذي ضمن تماسك البنية وتلاحمها في الرواية.
وتناول مسرحية سعد الله ونوس "طقوس الإشارات والتحولات" وبينت كيف أن بنية المفارقة في هذه المسرحية اتخذت طابعاً مركباً على مستوى الحدث، وعلى مستوى الشخصية.
وزيادة في المنفعة والاستفادة ألحقت الدراسة بمسرد بدراسات غربية تناولت موضوع المفارقة، نظرياً وتطبيقياً باللغة الإنجليزية في العقود الأربعة الأخيرة من هذا القرن أرجو أن يفيد منها الدارسون.
