يضم الكتاب دراسات وضعت في صورة محاضرات في تاريخية العلم. تناولت تلك المحاضرات أولاً التعريف بالعلم بوصفه ظاهرة حضارية تاريخية، أي يوصفه إنتاجاً اجتماعياً ثقافياً يتطور تاريخياً. ومن ثم عكفت على التعريف بتاريخية العلم من حيث إرهاصاته ونشأته وتطوره وانعكاساتها على طبيعة المعرفة والحقيقة العلمية لتناول تلك المحاضرات من ثم التعريف بالشروط الاجتماعية التاريخية لنشوء العلم وتطوره والتعريف بالعلم بوصفه ثورة فكرية ثقافية، أي بالأثر الثوري الذي تركه ويتركه العلم على وعي الأفراد والجماعات البشرية وإمكانات نحو قوى الإنتاج.
وتلقي هذه المحاضرات في مجملها الضوء على اللحظات الحاسمة في تاريخ علوم الطبيعة، وتعطي فكرة عامة عن نسق تطور هذه العلوم وخط تطورها الرئيسي. والغاية منها تعميق الوعي بأهمية العلم في حياتنا وتعميق إدراك البعد التاريخي للعقل البشري وخصوصية الحضارة الحديثة، وزعزعة التصورات القبلية التي تعوق انخراطنا في العصر الحديث.
