إن المهتمين في التربية النفسية يعرفون حق المعرفة بأنه منذ بدء العصر الحديث كانت هناك علاقة وطيدة بين علم النفس والتربية. فقد لجأ أوائل المصلحين التربويين إلى القواعد النفسية يعززون بها آراءهم تماماً، كما يفعلون الآن. إلا أنه يجب ملاحظة أنهم غالباً ما كانوا يلجأون إلى أصول نفسية وضعت خصيصاً لتتفق مع هذه الآراء، فبعض علماء النفس كانوا يعتقدون أن التربية ما زالت تنقصها تحسينات كبيرة فقد صمّموا خططاً لإدخال هذه التحسينات ثم عمدوا إلى البحث عن الحقائق التي تعزّز المشروعات التي يميلون إلى تطبيقها. وهنا ظهرت عيوب التأملات النظرية، ذلك أن كل واحد يستطيع أن يجد لكل نظرية تقريباً الحقائق التي تعزّزها إذا سمح له أن يختار الحقائق التي يريدها. فالشخص الذي يعتقد في براءة الطفل الطبيعية لن يجد أي صعوبة في جمع الأمثلة على صحة هذا الاعتقاد. كما أن الذي يعتقد عكس ذلك من تأصل الخطيبة والطبيعة الشريرة للإنسان العادي لن يجد أيضاً صعوبة في تأييد ما يعتقد بالأمثلة والوقائع. إلا أن التجاء المصلحين التربويين إلى الوقائع الخاصة بطبيعة الطفل وتعلمه كان مفيداً من بعض الوجوه، فمهما كان تحيّز الشخص لرأي من الآراء فإنه يستطيع إخفاء الحقائق تماماً، حتى ولو كانت غير متفقة مع ما يعتقده من نظريات. وهكذا بدا بالتدريج علم نفس حقيقي خاص بالطفولة ينظر إلى الأمور نظرة محايدة. كما كان لظهور نظرية التطور أثر كبير في الحافز على البدء بدراسة الأطفال، لا لمجرد تعزيز إحدى النظريات؛ بل لمعرفة طبيعة الأطفال.
هذا وعلى الرغم من ظهور هذه النظريات أو تلك، وصدور الكتب والدراسات التي تناولت النشاطات المختلفة لعلم نفس الطفل فإن هناك أشياء قد أغفلت.. وهناك نواح بأكملها من التربية النفسية الذي قد كرّس له العلماء والباحثين حياتهم لم تذكر ولم تعالج إلا ضمنياً.. من هذا المنطلق يأتي كتاب "التربية النربية للأطفال" الذي يطمح إلى تناول إحدى تلك الجوانب للموضوعات التي لم تتم معالجتها، والهدف إغناء مكتبة علم نفس بموضوعات كتلك، ومساعدة الطالب المهتم بالتربية النفسية للأطفال بصورة خاصة والباحثين في مجال علم النفس وعلم نفس الطفل بصورة عامة.
