كانت الإختبارات الكتابية الطريقة الأساسية في تقويم تعلم الطلبة، ومع تطور الإستراتيجيات التعليمية - التعلمية، والتركيز على الطالب كمحور للعملية، أصبح من الضروري العمل على التطوير في طرق التقويم.
ومن هنا، جاءت فكرة التقويم الواقعي، الذي يهدف إلى قياس مدى تحقق الأهداف لدى الطلة بطريقة واقعية وظروف تطبيقية عملية حقيقية.
ويهدف التقويم بالمفهوم الحديث إلى تحسين عملية التعلم، لذا فإن النظرة الحديثة لعملية التقويم أنه تقويم لأجل التعلم، وليس تقويماً للتعلم فقط، وهذا يعني ان التقويم عملية متكاملة مع عملية التعلم، وليست منفصلة عنها.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب في خمس فصول، تناول الفصل الأول مفهوم التقويم التقليدي والتقويم الحديث، وفوائد التقويم وأغراضه، ومبررات النظرة الحديثة للتقويم، وصولاً إلى مفهوم التقويم الواقعي.
أما الفصل الثاني فقد تضمن عرضاً مفصلاً مع الأمثلة التطبيقية العملية لإستراتيجيات التقويم الواقعي: التقويم المعتمد على الأداء، والتقويم بالورقة والقلم، والملاحظة، والتقويم بالتواصل، ومراجعة الذات، كما تضمن الفصل عرضاً لأدوات التقويم الواقعي: قوائم الشطب، وسلالم التقدير، وسلم التقدير اللفظي، وسجل وصف سير التعلم، والسجل القصصي.
وقد استعرض الفصل الثالث اهمية إستخدام ملف الإنجاز (البورتفوليو) كأحد أشكال التقويم الواقعي في تقويم تعلم الطلبة، مع عرض أمثلة لمجموعة من ملفات الإنجازات للمواد المختلفة.
وقد تم تخصيص الفصل الرابع للحديث عن مفهوم الإختبار التحصيلي، وأهميته، وأغراضه، وخطوات تطبيقية عملية لإعداد الإختبار التحصيلي.
وتضمن الفصل الخامس عرضاً للإحصائيات اللازمة لتحليل نتائج الإختبار التحصيلي، مثل مقاييس النزعة المركزية، ومقاييس التشتت، ومعاملات: الإرتباط، والصعوبة، والتمييز، وفاعلية البدائل، وطرق التحقق من صدق الإختبار وثباته.
