غالباً ما تكون دراسة الصخور الرسوبية عملاً ممتعاً ومجزياً ويتسم بالتحدّي. لكن للحصول على أقصى ما تقدّمه هذه الصخور، لا بد من القيام بعمل مضبوط ودقيق في الحقل. ويكمن سر نجاح العمل في الحقل في عين ثاقبة تبحث عن التفاصيل وعقل محب للاستطلاع، يعرف ما يتوقع وما يبحث عنه إذاً يجب على كل عامل في الحقل أن يكون قويّ الملاحظة يتفحّص كل شيء في المنكشف الصخري ثم يفكّر في المعالم التي يراها ويتفحّصها ثانية. وهذا الكتاب يهدف إلى إيضاح كيفية التعامل مع الصخور الرسوبية في الحقل، وقد كتب للذين يمتلكون خلفية جيولوجية، أي لطلاب السنة الجامعية الثانية على الأقل.
يصف هذا الكتاب في مستهله كيفية تسجيل معالم الصخور الرسوبية في الحقل، لا سيما عبر إنشاء سجلات بيانية. ويستخدم الأسلوب الأخير على نطاق واسع لأنه يوفّر أداة لتسجيل كل التفاصيل بشكل يسير يظهر الاتجاهات في تعاقباتها والاختلافات بين الآفاق. وفي الفصول التالية، تبحث أنواع الصخور الرسوبية المختلفة ونسجها وبناها مثلما يمكن أن توصف وتقاس في الحقل. وثمة فصل صغير مخصص للأحافير لأنها مكوّن مهم من مكونات الصخور الرسوبية، ويمكن منها استقاء كثير من المعلومات المفيدة لتحليل البيئة القديمة، كما أنها مهمة أيضاً في المضاهاة الطباقيّة والدراسات الأحفورية القديمة. وبعد جمع المعلومات الحقلية، تبرز مسألة الاستفادة منها. وثمة قسم ختامي يبحث بإيجاز التعرّف إلى السحنات ويمهّد الطريق نحو تفسيرها والتعرف إلى التعاقبات.
