تشكل ترجمة النفس، أو كتابة السيرة الذاتية، جنساً أدبياً خاصاً في التراث العربي، لم يحصل على ما يستحقه من عناية الدارسين، فبقي مهملاً ومنسياً، حتى جاء مؤلفو هذا الكتاب ومحرره دُوَيْت راينولدز ليرفعوا النقاب عن الخصائص الفنية الداخلية لهذا الجنس الأدبي المهمل.
وقد عُنيَ المؤلفون بدحض المغالطة التي شاعت في الأدب الغربي حول كون السيرة الذاتية نوعاً غربياً خالصاً، لم تعرفه التقاليد الأخرى غير الغربية، وبدّدوا الوهم الذي أشاعته القراءة الإستشراقية عن ندرة السيرة الذاتية في الأدب العربي.
فدرسوا السيرة الذاتية العربية دراسة نصية، بإختيار نماذج تطبيقية من بعضها، وتقديم مسرد شامل بما يزيد عن 150 عنواناً في السيرة الذاتية وترجمة النفس العربية حتى مطلع القرن العشرين.
يقدم الكتاب معاينة تحليلية في عدد من النصوص، ويتطلع إلى بيان تكوين هذا النوع الأدبي منذ بداياته الأولى وطرق تشكله، وصولاً إلى الخصائص الداخلية فيه من حيث دوافع المؤلفين، ورواية الأحلام، والمزاوجة بين الشعر والنثر في محاولة لتهريب إنفعالات الكاتب.
ويمثل الكتاب إضافة مهمة وإثراءً أدبياً في حقل لم يحظ بإهتمام المشتغلين بالأدب من العرب والمستشرقين معاً.
