إن التقدم التكنولوجي الذي شمل كل مجالات الحياة من حولنا قد قلب موازين الفكر المعماري في القرن العشرين. ولقد فرض هذا التقدم الكبير الذي حدث في جميع المجالات احتياجات وفراغات جديدة ومتطلبات لم تكن معروفة من قبل, وكان على المعماري أن يبحث لإيجاد الحلول المناسبة لتلك المتطلبات.
وفي سبيل ذلك اتجه بعض المعماريين إلى التقليد والاقتباس من الطرز السابقة بينما أخذ البعض الآخر يحاول الجمع بين أكثر من طراز وظل الحال كذلك حتى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر حيث ظهر عدد من المعماريين يرفض الاقتباس والنقل من الماضي، فكانت هناك محاولات لإيجاد لغة معمارية جديدة تتناسب مع العصر وكانت معظم هذه المحاولات تدور في إطار كلاسيكي.
وبالرغم من ذلك نجد أن تلك الحلول كانت في حقيقة الأمر هي الأسس التي بني عليها الجبل الأول من المعماريين فكرهم، وهذا الجيل الذي قاد الهجوم على الاتجاه الكلاسيكي وقدم فكراً جديداً يتناسب والتطور التكنولوجي الحادث، وقام هؤلاء الرواد بوضع الأسس التي سارت على نهجها العمارة حتى وقتنا الحاضر حيث خلقوا اتجاهات ونظريات جديدة، اختلفت باختلاف شخصية وطريقة كل منهم في الخلق والابتكار.
وتبع الجيل الأول جيلاً ثانياً من المعماريين قدم أفكاره الخاصة والتي كانت بعضها متأثرة بفكر الجيل الأول أو تدور في فلكه بينما أخذ البعض الآخر منها اتجاهاً جديداً مختلفاً. وجاء الجيل الثالث من المعماريين وبمجيئه بدأت صياغة فكر جديد أدى إلى حلول كان لا يمكن تخيلها من غير التطور التكنولوجي الهائل في كل المجالات إضافة إلى التطور في مجال مواد البناء.
وهذا الكتاب هو محاولة لعرض الاتجاهات العامة لفكرة هذه الأجيال المعمارية الثلاثة مسبوقة بعرض موجز للاتجاهات المعمارية السائدة في القرن التاسع عشر.
